Business Education
It is often overlooked, but our education should never stop and it is the single best ever investment
we can make in ourselves.
Now my personal belief is that our school system actually damages our young people and
fills them with limiting beliefs and strips away their hope and dreams. Our young people should be
allowed, even encouraged to follow their dreams.
Where do we thing future pilots, scientists, musicians and sports starts come from. There is no way our education system would let these people through without giving them some message along the lines of " don't be rediculous you'll never do that"
This aside, as adults, the best thing we can possibly do is continue our education. It should never stop.
The worst two words I hear is
" I Know"
We never know, we just understand what is accepted at the moment. Many years ago people knew
the world was flat!
Look at it this way. When you wanted to get a driving license you paid an expert to educate you and
teach you the required skills to do so. Did you try and do this on your own?
If you wanted to become a plumber or Electrician you would attend a vocational course to learn the skills
and get qualified. We'd soon run out of trainees if they just jumped in there and tried it out.
If you wanted to make a career change you would generally gain a qualification to qualify you in your chosen area.
If you wanted to grow your own veg you would buy books, DVD's, magazines etc to learn how best to do
it.
Why do we do all this?
Because we want the best outcome possible and get their as quickly as possible.
So why is it when people start a business, they generally do not attempt to aquire the skills needed
to achieve the best outcome in the quickest time?.
Its mainly because when we look at a business as an employee it seems easy. You just do your job
and everything happens around you. It happens around you because you have other people with specific skills making it happen.
One of the key skills people neglect is marketing. They beleive its as simple as putting an add in the paper with their name in big bold letters at the top and a bit about what they do.
And we wonder why 60 % of businesses fail in the first three years!
Would we let learner drivers just jump in a car and 'have a go' ? Of course not.
The hardest thing for a new business, and even an established one, is to find customers. Usually there is a 'first flush' where existing contacts agree to work with them but once these are over there comes a quiet time where businesses struggle.
If you do one thing to ensure your business thrives it would be this. Get some business specific training
which includes lead generation and lead conversion. If you know how to do this you'll never be out of business.
