UK figures announced today show that large scale employers are finding the present global economy a challenging place to do business in. So what should we and our governments do.
Clearly many more people would be better served taking their skill sets into their own business. Huge businesses are focussing on core activity more and more and outsourcing to more efficient flexible operations.
In terms of governments, well I look at things very simply. If I apply our G.O.P technique to this problem we find answers.
1) In order to create large scale sustainable jobs we need to attract more businesses to set up in the UK
2) To attract more businesses we need to have a more enterprise friendly political and economical environment which rewards risk takers and business builders.
People will start and run profitable businesses if they can see some reward for doing so. This means lowering corporation tax and lowering capital gains tax. This will create an environment which businesses will happily start up in and transfer to. This in turn will create jobs for people who are presently claiming benefits who will then not onluy cease claiming benefits but pay income tax so we have a double bubble benefit to our economy and society.
We must also shrink the public sector by about half and transfer much of what it has taken on into private enterprises. If there really is a need for the service then people will pay for it directly using money from better employment and lower council taxes. They are paying for it now anyway whether they need it or not. At least give them a choice.
However our political system with it's 5 years short termism and opposition for oppositions sake means our politicians and local councilors will need courage to take such steps
